 The Claudius Exchange

This is not a public in-game conversion rate.

It is a narrative device to help convert favours or "boons" into Claudius Credits, so as to drive an in-game economy and provide some structure to the weekend. Although Claudius is using something like it in his own fevered brain, it is not so hard and fast in the game world. There's qualitative wiggle room so we can balance it across the playerbase for characters. Social status is important to Claudius, he being a vampire who gets by on politics.

Remember also that the new sires-to-be may have their childer-to-be stolen from them (see Human Hide and Seek). Everyone is going to lose a lot at various points, and get some good roleplay out of it. This boons and Credit trade is the politics side of the game for people who enjoy that; there is just as much (if not more) room to be gained from your personal plot and smaller-scale, emotionally intimate stories. The big political shakers will be able to laugh and share condolences together off-game on the morning of the third night, when we have a clearer idea whose auctioned childe is going to be kidnapped and stolen from them by some rival elder - or more likely some broke neonate who fell in love with a human.

You decide how in debt you get to Claudius.

Even his own childer aren’t getting mates rates, much to their frustration.

In giving Claudius this level (or "denomination") of boon you are effectively signing up to do him a favour at some, unknown point in the future. Please see the Boons Section on the Renaissance page for more information on how vampire finance works. (Opens in a new window.)

Claudius does not ever state who is of "moderate" standing or otherwise (he wouldn't insult quite so!) - I am doing this, as the organiser. The above is just an off-game mechanic to help you see where the Claudius Credits are getting shared to and why. Vampire social status is a complex and larger thing than just one little Giovanni's own interests; it's decided by the vampire world as a whole. Position counts in our calculations, such as Princes, Sheriffs, other enforcers etc... (domain prestige also; position sometimes counts for nothing if you're Prince of Hill Of No Name), as does Pedigree, lineage, clan, generation, deeds, repayment on other boons historically in the vampire's life....

Don't work yourself up over this too much because these pesky Claudius Credits will go flying as soon as the game starts.

Remember also that the new sires-to-be may have their childer-to-be stolen from them (see Human Hide and Seek).

The point is to start losing and gaining them in whatever way that drives roleplay and boons between people - boons that you will cash in over the game, when your character faces more desperate or exciting situations. Even elders are going to be affected by the human powers, as if they were themselves human, and so they might enter predicaments that will require an apology with a boon.

Even elders are going to be affected by the human’s powers, and so they might enter predicaments that will require an apology to another vampire - with a boon. Perhaps a very big apology.

People who want to be playing the political game are therefore encouraged to play elders who will be the movers and shakers; people who want to be monstered by those same elders and controlled, seduced, wined and dined or otherwise encouraged to become an ally, should play younger vampires. If you sign up for an elder you should try to drive roleplay for other people; with power comes responsibility, etc, etc. Want to be controlled and “forced” into situations? Go for the lowest standing of neonates. (Reminder: all situations are simulated only and you must enthusiastically consent to engaging in roleplay with difficult themes.) If you like the idea of letting go of the reins for once, neonates are a great role to take on, even for the experienced LARPers. Even veterans get sick of always driving things. (Saying that, neonates can have immense power behind the throne too, and try to manipulate and encourage the good will of their elders, to help them achieve things they could otherwise not.)

This is a play to lose/play to lift game, it is a one-shot, and elders losing in big ways are the things players talk about for years to come, and thank you for doing.

Remember, because of the ritual around the estate: You cannot die.

Go fucking crazy.
